They Will Come to Rue the Day

Republican Senators and Corporate America are Responsible for Trump and the Insurgency

In two weeks, the Senate will hold a trial that is supposed to determine if Donald Trump was responsible for the insurgency at the Capitol last week. But as an American citizen who has watched this Congress in action for the past four years, I can tell you two things already. First, Senators will not hold him responsible even though they lived through the proof. Second, the GOP Senators themselves are ultimately responsible for the way Trump conducted himself over the past term of office, and therefore responsible for the precarious stance that our democracy currently finds itself. And, by the way, so is Corporate America.

The trial will present overwhelming evidence of Trump’s guilt, and the Republicans, or the great majority of them, will find excuses why they should not vote to convict. As a person who has protected our democracy for 30 years, it is heartbreaking to me to see the legacy this Congress will leave for our posterity. I fear our children will never know real democracy, as it existed BT (before Trump).

It is equally heartbreaking to realize that Trump will begin yet another quest for the White House in probably just over two years. Another Trump term will destroy our country. The first amendment will quickly be stomped into the ground, followed by the complete overthrow of our judicial system into one with judges solely appointed by Trump. This will also place our country in kind with Russia, North Korea, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Not even Trumpers support that.

Ironically the senators who will vote against conviction will do so to “protect” their seats because they fear being primaried more than anything else. Have they learned nothing in the past four years? What will they protect once our democracy is destroyed? Trump will not need a congress. His word will become law via fiat.

And what about Corporate America? They have also heard the lies of the last four years. They have even heard Senators Cruz, Hawley, Graham, and others repeat those lies repeatedly. Yet, they still supported them financially. In the past 30 years, virtually no law has come to pass, even if most Americans supported it unless Big Business also approved it. On top of that, Big Business got most of their desired laws passed even when the majority of American citizens were against them. The point is that Corporate America is a source of potent political power, and yet they have neutered themselves when it comes to reining in Trump. I wonder what will happen to them when Trump has completed his takeover? Will he allow corporate executives to run their companies or put “Yes Men” in their stead? Whatever happens, they will deserve it.
