An Idea to Save Our Country

Given the invasion of the Capitol, our country is about to make a decision that will chart the nation’s course for centuries to come. The decision? To become a nation of White Supremacist Fascists or one that embraces an inclusive democracy. One willing to recognize that power, both economic and political, need to be shared more equitably if we are to achieve “…a more perfect Union.”

Ultimately this decision will be made by the voters. But how they decide will be the result of several factors. What will the politicians say? What about the purveyors of misinformation like the social media and television companies that profit from catching readers’ interests with ever more outlandish “news” stories? What role will big business play? Will they advertise with companies that spread lies, or will they insist on truthful coverage? Will corporate America decide not to fund hate-mongering politicians?

Citizens need to take an active role in these most critical decisions, but how? We know for sure that the hate and lies will not stop unless those who get paid to encourage the hatred no longer get paid. Realistically, there is virtually no chance of that happening. So, what can we do to change the dynamics? And while we are at it, what can we do to support the presentation of truth to all Americans? Let us keep the politicians out of it because no one believes them anyway. Since we want to get both red and blue states involved, we need to bring in the big guns, the ones who people on each side want to listen to, and those who have the resources to research an issue thoroughly.

What would happen if some of the most gifted orators on Fox debated with their counterparts from MSNBC? After all, these are the folks that shape the public’s views on the issues of today. Each side would be required to put forth evidence that supported their assertions or admit their statements were not based on evidence but bias. A panel of neutral judges (agreed to by both sides) would be established to determine all assertions’ veracity. Subjects would be selected in advance so both sides could present their best version of the issue and how it should be decided.

Sean versus Rachel, Tucker versus Ari. The public interest would be huge. Corporate America would support such an endeavor. Both Fox and MSNBC would cover the event simultaneously.

Each side picks four topics over eight weeks…get ready to change America…Go!
